Code Quality: A Practical Guide for Software Teams. Here's the short version.
Code quality is multidimensional — correctness, readability, maintainability, reliability, and security hygiene. No single score captures it.
What code quality means. Correctness — behaves per requirements across edge cases. Readability — others can change code safely. Maintainability — low coupling, sensible complexity. Reliability — predictable failure modes and recovery.
Process building blocks. Coding standards documented and enforced by linters where possible. Peer code review on every meaningful change. Automated tests with meaningful assertions. Static analysis in CI or scheduled scans.
Metrics and their limits. Coverage, complexity averages, and defect counts inform decisions but can be gamed. Use trends, not vanity targets.
