Password Strength Checker
Check password strength, entropy and estimated crack time, with tips to improve it. Nothing leaves your browser. Free and private: runs in your browser.
Type a password to see a strength score, entropy in bits, how long it would take to crack, and which patterns make it weak.
Hashing runs locally in your browser. Your input never leaves this page.
Use cases
- Set or review a password policy for your app.
- Create strong credentials for test and service accounts.
- Explain to users why a password was rejected.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a password strong?
Length matters most: 14+ characters or a passphrase of four or more random words. Avoid common passwords, keyboard patterns, years and word + number + symbol formulas.
Is the Password Strength Checker free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser, so your input is never uploaded or stored.
Is hashing the same as encryption?
No. A hash is one-way: you cannot get the input back. Encryption is reversible with a key. Use slow password hashes (bcrypt, Argon2, PBKDF2) for passwords and fast hashes (SHA-256) for integrity checks.
